Physical engineering demand centres on domestic infrastructure and hardware

Spotlight, October 3, 2026

Openings for non-software engineers remain tied to on-site capital projects and semiconductor fabrication, showing low remote availability, high geographic concentration, and firm mid-career compensation.

Non-software engineering encompasses mechanical, electrical, civil, structural, process, manufacturing, quality, and hardware engineering disciplines, alongside construction management and architecture. According to the Arihaan crawl, the job family accounts for 84,709 open jobs on 3 October 2026, representing 5.2% of all tracked openings across 213 countries. The stable-panel index for the category sits at 99.57, down 0.43% since the base day of 26 September 2026.

Unlike software engineering and digital support roles, physical engineering remains rooted in physical worksites, manufacturing plants, and fabrication laboratories. The remote share of postings stands at 3.9%, well below the broader labour market average of 7.0%. Between 29 September and 3 October 2026, employers in the Arihaan crawl opened 9,988 postings and closed 9,213, resulting in a net addition of 775 open roles across the five-day period.

Geographic footprint shows heavy concentration in the United States

Hiring demand is concentrated in the United States, which accounts for 45,447 vacancies or 53.7% of all non-software engineering openings in the Arihaan crawl. India represents the second-largest national market with 5,310 positions (6.3%), followed by France with 4,132 vacancies (4.9%).

This geographical distribution reflects capital-intensive commitments in domestic fabrication, aerospace, and public infrastructure. Because physical prototyping, plant operations, and site management mandate physical attendance, employers cannot readily substitute remote labour or arbitrage wages across borders. In Europe, the United Kingdom records 4,120 openings, while Germany records 2,827 postings and Canada accounts for 2,218 roles.

Semiconductor and civil engineering firms drive employer demand

Employer demand is led by hardware manufacturers, aerospace contractors, and global infrastructure consultancies. In the Arihaan crawl, Micron Technology leads all individual organisations with 1,382 open jobs, followed by infrastructure advisor AECOM with 876 vacancies and Weblee Technologies with 817 roles.

The organizational distribution illustrates two concurrent operational priorities. Industrial manufacturers such as Applied Materials (702 postings) and aerospace manufacturers including Blue Origin (747 openings) seek specialised process, electrical, and hardware engineers. Concurrently, civil engineering groups such as Egis (763 positions) and Parsons Corporation (663 roles) maintain sizable hiring books for civil, structural, and environmental specialists. Professional services engineering consultancies ALTEN and Assystem contribute 531 and 522 openings respectively.

Experience commands high pay as artificial intelligence tools integrate

Organisations show a pronounced preference for established technical capability over early-career hiring. Mid-level roles represent 50.8% of all postings in the Arihaan crawl, while senior engineers account for 26.7%. Managerial posts comprise 8.4% of the mix, whereas entry-level positions capture 5.6% of vacancies and internships account for 5.9%.

Pay transparency remains selective, with 5.7% of postings publishing compensation figures. Across 4,036 United States listings with published remuneration, the median annual pay reaches $145,000, with the 25th percentile at $110,000 and the 75th percentile at $180,000.

Skills requirements are shifting as computational design and automated simulation expand. Artificial intelligence skills appear in 12.5% of new postings, while generative AI is specified in 4.3% of new listings. This adoption pattern is consistent with increasing integration of automated simulation, structural modelling, and hardware synthesis into traditional engineering workflows.
