Measuring employer demand for artificial intelligence skills across global hiring
Spotlight, October 7, 2026
New postings show artificial intelligence requirements clustering heavily in specialized technical disciplines and selected corporate functions, while overall penetration across broader hiring remains modest.
Between 1 October and 3 October 2026, 11.7% of newly published job vacancies specified artificial intelligence skills or named specific toolsets, according to the Arihaan crawl of employer career sites. Out of 129,001 new postings observed in that window, 15,145 asked for artificial intelligence proficiencies, while generative artificial intelligence appeared in 4.3% of listings, representing 5,516 postings. On 3 October 2026, the overall artificial intelligence posting share stood at 11.1%.
The aggregate figure conceals a steep divide between technical specialisms and the broader workforce. In core technology functions, 45.2% of new vacancies required artificial intelligence competencies. Across non-technical roles, that proportion stood at 7.4%. As hiring volumes stabilize, with the Arihaan crawl stable-panel index at 97.89, employers are treating artificial intelligence less as an experimental exploration and more as an operational prerequisite for technical teams.
Technical and corporate roles absorb artificial intelligence requirements
Demand remains heavily concentrated in analytical and software development disciplines. Across the Arihaan crawl, Data & AI positions led all categories, with 75.5% of 3,332 new listings requiring artificial intelligence skills and 41.2% specifying generative tools. Product & Design followed at 44.5%, alongside Software Engineering at 42.2%.
Adoption is also establishing a foothold in corporate workflows. In Marketing & Communications, 26.7% of 3,126 new vacancies sought artificial intelligence proficiencies, while Executive & General Management reached 26.1%. In contrast, high-volume frontline functions show minimal explicit requirements: Healthcare & Nursing registered 1.3% across 17,340 listings, and Retail & Hospitality recorded 0.6% across 20,027 postings.
Tooling shifts toward agents and integrated infrastructure
The lexicon of hiring requirements highlights an operational pivot toward autonomous workflows and enterprise data pipelines. Among specific terms tracked by the Arihaan crawl, Agentic AI appeared in 2,857 postings during the window from 1 October to 3 October 2026, followed by LLM in 2,024 listings and Generative AI in 1,885 postings.
Enterprise platforms and foundation models also command a measurable presence. Postings naming Claude reached 1,182, while Copilot was cited in 1,097 vacancies. Infrastructure components remain closely coupled with model implementation: Kubernetes was listed in 1,947 postings, Databricks in 783, and retrieval-augmented generation, or RAG, in 778. For technical candidates, tooling fluency is increasingly assessed alongside traditional systems engineering.
International variation reflects distinct local occupational structures
National adoption rates diverge widely across major economies. In India, 28.0% of 4,603 new postings in the Arihaan crawl requested artificial intelligence capabilities, consistent with a high concentration of technical hubs and offshore development operations. Spain followed at 19.0% across 1,535 listings, with the United Kingdom recording 17.1% across 5,986 postings and Germany at 16.7%.
By comparison, the United States recorded an artificial intelligence share of 8.9% across 79,732 new listings. This lower national average reflects a large denominator of traditional, distributed service employment. In broader labour benchmarks, BLS JOLTS recorded 7.08 million total job openings in August 2026, alongside an unemployment rate of 4.2% reported for September 2026 by the BLS Current Population Survey. Sustained expansion in artificial intelligence demand outside technical clusters will depend on whether back-office and service employers formalize requirements as workplace software evolves.
