Where remote and hybrid work persists across global hiring
Spotlight, October 16, 2026
Across more than 4.0 million vacancies tracked globally, remote arrangements have settled into a distinct equilibrium concentrated in technical specialties, senior roles, and cross-border delivery hubs.
Postings across corporate career sites show that remote and hybrid work has settled into a persistent, functional division rather than returning entirely to pre-pandemic norms. Across 4,006,999 open jobs tracked globally on 16 October 2026, the Arihaan crawl records that 6.8% of postings offer fully remote arrangements, while 4.5% offer hybrid setups.
Rather than a uniform shift across all employment, flexibility has become tightly segmented. For business leaders and investors, the data indicates that remote work is now deployed as a deliberate commercial instrument: retained where knowledge work faces international competition, and withheld in operational or entry-level positions.
Remote work concentrates in specialised white-collar disciplines
The distribution of flexible arrangements is sharply segmented by functional discipline. According to the Arihaan crawl, Data & AI records the highest remote penetration among all occupational groups at 19.5%, alongside a 14.5% hybrid share. Product & Design follows closely, with 17.7% of vacancies offered on a fully remote basis. Knowledge-intensive disciplines such as Software Engineering and Marketing & Communications also sustain elevated remote shares of 14.9% and 15.4% respectively.
In contrast, functions tied to physical presence, customer contact, and capital equipment offer virtually no remote flexibility. Retail & Hospitality records a 1.0% remote share, while Manufacturing & Skilled Trades stands at 2.2% and Healthcare & Nursing posts 2.9%. This divide underscores that flexibility is primarily governed by the technical feasibility of asynchronous collaboration.
Nearshoring hubs and European markets diverge in flexibility models
Cross-country comparisons reveal distinct national approaches to workplace flexibility. Developing service exporters and nearshoring centres exhibit the highest proportions of fully remote postings. Based on the Arihaan crawl, the Philippines leads all tracked countries with a 14.6% fully remote share, followed by Brazil at 11.2% and Mexico at 9.8%. Multinational employers appear to rely on remote postings in these regions to access distributed technical and operational talent.
Advanced Western economies reflect different compromises. In the United States, fully remote openings account for 5.1% of postings, with hybrid listings at 2.8%. In Western Europe, employers show a stronger preference for hybrid structures over full decentralisation. The Netherlands records an 18.0% hybrid share alongside 6.2% remote listings, while the United Kingdom records a 9.1% hybrid share and 6.6% remote listings. This geographic split suggests that domestic European employers favour structured office attendance, whereas overseas hiring relies on fully distributed models.
Experience tiers govern workplace autonomy as entry paths narrow
Seniority represents another defining axis of remote work availability. In the Arihaan crawl, vacancies at the Director level post a 12.9% remote share, and Senior postings stand at 12.5%. Conversely, Entry level positions record a remote share of 3.5%, and Intern roles record 2.9%. Intermediate management roles also show restrained flexibility, with Managers posting 4.6%.
This distribution reflects corporate caution around early-career onboarding, culture transmission, and performance oversight. Employers grant autonomy primarily to proven professionals who require minimal supervision. In tighter labour conditions, such as the United States where the BLS Current Population Survey puts the unemployment rate at 4.2% and BLS JOLTS records a quits rate of 1.9%, experienced workers retain the bargaining leverage to demand location flexibility. For workforce planners, however, restricting remote access at entry levels creates long-term challenges for distributed talent development.
