How hiring concentration shapes the corporate labour market
Spotlight, October 18, 2026
The largest global employers account for a modest fraction of open vacancies, leaving recruitment conditions anchored by mid-sized firms and broad industry dispersion.
Discussions of corporate employment often focus on multinational giants, yet vacancy volumes reveal a decentralised hiring landscape. According to the Arihaan crawl of 112,176 employer career sites on 18 October 2026, active recruitment is spread across 104,176 organisations worldwide, with the largest employers accounting for only a small slice of total openings.
Understanding how concentrated vacancies really are helps executives and talent leaders benchmark recruitment risk. When the largest hirers shift their headcount goals, their scale can alter local talent pools quickly, even if their share of the wider global market remains limited.
Hiring concentration remains low across global vacancies
Corporate demand is distributed across a deep pool of employers rather than dominated by a handful of firms. Data from the Arihaan crawl shows that the top 10 hiring organisations account for 3.7% of all open jobs, while the top 50 represent 10.7%, and the top 100 represent 15.3%. There are 558 companies with 1,000 or more open jobs, and 6,086 companies maintaining at least 100 openings.
Among individual organisations, Domino's leads all tracked employers with 24,867 open jobs, representing 0.6% of all vacancies. Cross Border Talents follows with 19,585 openings, and Mercor lists 17,153 roles. Traditional retail and service employers also maintain substantial demand, with Target posting 14,109 openings and Loblaw Companies Limited recording 14,061.
Retail and hospitality drive weekly opening increases
Weekly movements show that enterprise hiring velocity varies widely by sector. In the week to 18 October 2026, like-for-like comparisons from the Arihaan crawl indicate that consumer-facing employers accounted for several of the largest volume additions.
Loblaw Companies Limited posted the largest net increase, adding 3,459 open jobs, a rise of 32.6%. Cracker Barrel added 1,305 postings, an increase of 24.2%, while Macy's expanded its vacancies by 1,199 roles, or 18.3%. Technical and business services also saw selective expansion, with Wipro adding 645 jobs, up 11.1%, and software firm Mercor adding 638 postings, up 3.9%.
Corporate hiring reductions show targeted retrenchment
Alongside weekly additions, several major employers scaled back their active listings. Lowe's Companies, Inc. posted a like-for-like reduction of 1,326 open jobs, a decrease of 10.4%, leaving 11,404 total vacancies. In professional services, PwC recorded a like-for-like reduction of 360 roles, down 3.5% to 9,834 jobs.
Mid-sized employers also adjusted postings downward across the week. Northwell Health reduced open roles by 244 to 1,037, a decline of 19.1%. Nagarro lowered its open jobs by 155 to 708, down 18.0%, and Gilead Sciences cut 117 positions to 428, a contraction of 21.5%. Because these adjustments occurred across healthcare, software services and pharmaceuticals, they illustrate discipline within specific operating budgets rather than an across-the-board retrenchment.
Broad distribution buffers aggregate hiring dynamics
Because the top 100 employers represent only 15.3% of vacancies, aggregate recruitment conditions do not hinge on the hiring plans of a few corporate boards. Macroeconomic indicators reflect this gradual, decentralised pace. Official figures from the BLS Current Employment Statistics showed nonfarm payroll additions of 29,000 in September 2026, while BLS JOLTS reported 7.08 million open jobs in August 2026.
On the Arihaan crawl stable panel, the index stood at 98.85 on 18 October 2026, down 0.26 points on the day. For talent strategists and investors, the high degree of dispersion means talent competition remains localised. Until large enterprise hiring shifts systematically in one direction, overall labour demand will continue to be governed by the vast majority of mid-sized employers.
